What ONE book has changed how you do business and why?
Definitely the 1921 classic book called The Go-Getter: A Story That Tells You How To Be One, which was written by Peter B. Kyne. This book tells the story of a young man, Bill Peck, who is looking to find his way in the business world. Bill adopts the motto of “It shall be done.” Period. No ifs, ands, or buts about it.
When forging the business currents in today’s global economy, I have found it to be critical to adopt the “go-getter mentality” of “it shall be done” and then run toward the goal. As I’ve adopted this attitude, no matter the hurdles, difficulties, or failures, I have been able to get back up, dust myself off, and keep on going—striving to meet my goals, daily.
This book is short and sweet, but it packs a mighty punch. I’ve read it over and over again and each time it re-motivates me to set my goals high and run after them. After all, when you give it your all, you’ve got absolutely nothing to lose in the end.
The Go-Getter taught me that even if you’re unsure on how to accomplish your goals, keep a positive mental disposition and say you can do it. Then figure out how to do it and make sure you succeed. Go above and beyond!

What ONE book has changed how you do business and why?
The book that has changed the way I interact in professional situations is Liel Lowndes’ How to Talk to Anyone. He gives 92 tricks for big success in business and they are 92 tricks that everyone could use. I’m quite a nervous talker when in large groups but Lowndes said this can leave others with an impression that you are lying or not genuine. I’m now very cautious of my posture, hand gestures, eye movements, and even leg movements! He also suggested not to smile right away when giving a handshake. If you save the smile for the moment when the hands are pulling away the other person feels special and you come across as confident and authoritative. This has made a huge shift in my confidence and the way I believe others perceive me.

What ONE book has changed how you do business and why?
I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell. The concept of how we succeed and the time necessary to achieve success has really changed my business and the small business owners who I consult with. The idea that it takes 10,000 hours to become proficient in a skill is one that most people overlook. They try something for a couple of months, it doesn’t work and then they try something else. Having the tenacity to stick it out for 10,000 hours is one of the key indicators of mastery.
What’s the next business success book on your list that you plan on reading?
